Since yesterday wasn’t too exciting, I thought I’d share with you the what and why of my Low Sugar diet. I still eat “normal” foods, like fruits, veggies, meat, dairy, fats like oil and butter, and wheat products (I like bread and pasta!). I am just controlling my refined white sugar intake.
White sugar is a poison to our bodies; common sense and thorough research will tell you that. There is sugar in a lot of things we eat that we can’t exactly help unless we pay hundreds of dollars to get everything sugar free! I don’t have that kind of budget. So I do the best I can with what I have. I refuse desserts unless I know they are sugar free. I try not to eat too many carby things in one day, like a bunch of pasta and breads because carbs turn themselves into sugars anyway. Confession: I am eating a plain white bagel smothered with cream cheese as I type this. But that’s ok, I am NOT cheating! I promise. But here’s an outline of my rules:
- No candy (I don’t like candy much anyway)
- No chocolate (unless sugar free)
- No desserts (unless sugar free)
- No unnecessary or added sugar
- No sugary drinks
Of course I can have sugar free chocolate and desserts! I do all the time. One of my favorite breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack/dessert (yes, all those things!) foods is a Chocolate Peanutbutter Banana Shake. *Recipe at the bottom* It is healthy, satisfying, and absolutely delectable! Another thing I like to eat is Overnight Oats. Just take a look at Pinterest and you’ll find zillions of different ways and flavors to make them. My favorite combo is chocolate-peanutbutter-banana. Of course. Reese’s is my favorite candy bar. I’m a chocopbholic! Lol 😄.
So anywho, that’s what I’m trying to do. It is good discipline. Bonus #1: several people have even told me I look thinner. And that’s not even what I’m trying to do! I don’t even keep track of my weight. All I want to do is take care of the body the Lord gave me, and eating right is a very good way to do that. Bonus #2: you can actually eat your desserts for breakfast if you are in a rush or if you need a sweet fix RIGHT NOW, because they are healthy!
Anyways, I started this “diet” on February 15 of this year and I am determined to make it an entire year without cheating. Except on my birthday/graduation party and Christmas. Even then I don’t want to over-do it; maybe I’ll have one tiny slice of my cake. Maybe I won’t have any at all and be proud of myself.
My uncle and brother challenged me to do this because they didn’t believe I could handle low sugar for a whole year. After the year is up, I hope to continue it and try to cut out most, if not all, of the bad carbs. If you are looking for a diet to lose/maintain weight while eating lots of good stuff, I recommend either the low-carb or Trim Healthy Mama diet. I know several people who have really benefited from these.
You know, cutting out the sugar reminds me of other things in life- like cutting out laziness, anger, joking, and many other things. Don’t get me wrong- humor is good in moderation, but it must be wholesome and not discouraging to others. After all, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” ~Proverbs 17:22. But we need to have one focus, one goal, and that is living our lives for others to bring glory to Jesus Christ. We need to “…lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us…” ~Hebrews 11:2.
Chocolate Peanutbutter Banana Shake:
- 1 frozen banana (about 3-4 frozen pieces)
- 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
- 3/4-1 cup any milk
- 1 large spoonful of peanutbutter
- *optional: 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Blend together all ingredients until smooth. I like mine thick and creamy, but if you like more of a frappe texture or less banana flavor, use 2 or 3 banana pieces and 2-4 ice cubes. You can experiment with whatever combination you like! Please note that bananas must be frozen! It won’t be as creamy or cold if they aren’t.
