Be A Flashlight

Here’s a little analogy the came to me the other day. I was doing my devotions. and suddenly, the inspiration struck. So, here we go!

What is the purpose of a flashlight?

The obvious answer is, to shine light so we can see when it’s too dark or dim.

There are four different reasons I came up with as to why people use flashlights.

The first reason is to see where you are going, so you don’t stumble over any obstacles, and to be aware of any potential dangers that could harm you. Secondly, shadow puppets come in the picture. Don’t think I’m weird yet, you’ll see how this “plays out” {pun intended- I couldn’t resist!}. The third reason is to look or find something. And the last use I could think of, is to help them when they work on or fix something, because the light seeps into all the tight spaces that you cannot see without the light.. I am sure there are many other reasons we could think of, but we’ll just stick with the ones we have now.

Right now, we will look at the different mechanics of the flashlight.

In order for a flashlight to be put to use, there must be a person who knows what they are doing to handle it properly. The right kind of batteries must be in tact. The top of the flashlight, where the light comes through, must be clean, so it doesn’t hinder the way the light filters through. The lightbulb inside cant be broken or burnt out. And last, but not least, is the On/Off switch/button.

I think I covered everything it takes to make a flashlight ready to be of service. Now, let us examine the spiritual aspect of these things. God, in the spiritual sense, is the Person in charge of making everything work right. You, yourself, are the flashlight.

This next thing is what everyone checks first, if their flashlight won’t turn on- the batteries! Salvation is the battery that allows the light currents to do their job. It can’t be just any battery, though. It has to be the right size to fit. A D battery has no use if a flashlight takes AA’s. There is no artificial Salvation! The only way to obtain Salvation is through Jesus Christ.

“…I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”

~John 14:6

And, your batteries cannot be dead. You get recharged by reading the Word, and praying every day! The more you serve Him, the more you love Him. The more you love Him, the brighter His Light through you will shine!

The part on top shouldn’t be dirty, because it hinders the light from coming through as well as it needs to. The dirt and grime that gets smeared on there is sin. The Bible says our own righteousness is filthy, so we need to get ourselves and our own ways of thinking and doing out of the way. Your sin can be a hindrance to someone else’s walk with the Lord, and dim the path they are walking on. We should never, in any way, intentionally be a stumbling block to others! Instead, keep close tabs on yourself, and at the tug of any conviction the Lord puts on your heart, take care of it immediately!

Okay, so there’s this thingy in a flashlight that is called a lightbulb. Obviously, that is what the light comes from. This types being baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ. That means you are sanctified, which literally means cleaned and set aside for service. If you get burned out or broken, it doesn’t mean the effect of your baptism has run out, or that you have to be re-baptized. It just means you need a tune-up.

Then when you get the Gift of the Holy Ghost, that’s when the switch gets turned to ON, when you are in service, and brightly shining the Light of Jesus Christ! Notice that a flashlight can do nothing on its own; neither can you, for that matter. It responds to the power of the One holding it. When you are fully surrendered to Christ, you don’t tell Him which way you want to point, but you follow where He leads.

Additionally, the flashlight is either a help or a hinderance. A help to some, for the obvious reasons, but a hinderance to others, because sometimes the Gospel Light is shined into their eyes, and they can’t see. The Bible says,

“In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.”

~Luke 10:21

So, the Light that gives sight to one, hides, or blinds, the Word of God for another. The Lord works in simple, yet mysterious ways.

Alright, so I mentioned that the first and main reason people use a flashlight is pretty basic- to see where they are going, and to be aware of any potential danger or harm. Sin has this entire world covered in a sheet of darkness. Nearly the whole world has shut out the Light, Which is God, and God alone. No one seems to know which way is right or wrong anymore, because the devil has pulled the proverbial wool over their eyes, and  twisted them up in the tangled web of their own selfish and busy lives. Now that we understand the fundamentals of being a spiritual flashlight, we can learn how to be of service, and to put into practice the Scripture below.

“Ye are the light of the world…”

~Matthew 5:14

It is because of the fact that people nowadays cannot see where the path they are taking is leading them, that we need to be in tip-top working order to shine the Light on their path. The way they are walking is leading them straight to the pits of hell! We need the Lord to use us to show them that there are obstacles of unbelief in front of them, and that they will stumble and get hurt. There is danger of demons lurking in the dark corners ready and waiting to subtly attack their unsuspecting prey. Very sadly, there are human beings out there who refuse to listen to common sense, and continue in the way of the world’s deep, dark insanity.

The only hope for them is to call upon the Name of the Lord in a prayer of desperation and repentance. There is no use trying to sugar-coat it. I know it sounds harsh, but I am telling you, it is the Truth!

The second use of a flashlight is that of making shadows. This is one way the Lord can use us to show people who they are in Christ, and what Christ looks like. If you think about a shadow, it shows you what is in front of the light, even if you can’t see the real object. The closer the object comes  to the shadow, the more defined the shadow becomes until the real object and the shadow become united. Christ is the real object, and we are His shadow. The closer we get to the end of time, the closer He is drawing near to us until we become united when we meet Him in the Air!

A flashlight is used a lot of the time to help us find something. In this case, we would be used of God to find souls to bring into His Kingdom! The Light of Christ will bring every predestinated soul that may be wallowing in darkness to the Truth!

A flashlight also shows people all the things going on in the tight spaces, whether they are fixing things, or something similar. Sometimes, deep in the corners of the heart, there are some tight spots that need fixed or cleaned. The Gospel will always guide you on the right path, so It will always show you where you are wrong, so you can straighten up, clean up, and fix up. The Light detects things you cannot see with out It!

I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

~John 8:12

But, wait… I thought Jesus just said that we are the light of the world.

“At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you… If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

~John 14:20 & 23

You see, Jesus is in the Father, and we are in Jesus, and He is in us. It is not as confusing as it may sound. If we abide in Christ, and obey His Word, He dwells inside of us. And if He is the Light, and the Light abides in us, then we become that Light! But it is not our own light but Hs shining through us! We are just the vessel He uses to shed His Light to the world.

One last thought on being a flashlight- some burn brighter than others. But you just remember, that as long as you’re following all the steps He requires you to obey, no matter how weak your beam of light seems, it will always penetrate through the darkness. Light and darkness cannot co-exist! You can’t have darkness if there is light in the room.

My pastor put it so beautifully, when he said, “If we were here on a pitch black night, no streetlamps or anything like that, and I were to turn on this little flashlight here, it wouldn’t matter how dark it was out there, we would have light.” As long as there is Light, there is Hope.

Be a flashlight to the world today!

I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject! Do you have anything to add to this analogy? How have you been a flashlight to others, or has someone been a flashlight to you?

Please like, comment and share this post to spread the word! I would be most appreciative if you would help me with that!
